If your biomass wood chip is wet, contaminated or poor quality, you will need more fuel to generate the heat for your RHI payments, making it more expensive for less return. It also means more maintenance on your boiler and more downtime, so it makes more sense to get it right from the start.

Insufficient moisture content makes the wood burn too rapidly. Excessive moisture reduces the power output and causes excessive ash production and emissions. So it’s important to get the balance right. If you’re not sure what you need, get in touch with us, our team of experts are waiting to help.

Moisture content

Class A2 Moisture content of less than 35% BS EN 14961

Moisture accreditation allows for standard of sub 35% but Spring has the capacity to dry to whatever moisture content is required by the customer for their specific use. Our quality control systems allow control of the drying flowers to produce wood with a specific moisture contact. Each drying floor can be allocated to a specific job and quantified accordingly.

Wood chip delivery

Tricky delivery access? No problem!

Designing a new installation with vehicular access in mind is crucially important and easier on some sites than others. Gateways, driveways and height restrictions all need to be checked. Getting as close as possible to the fuel silo is essential, especially if you’re having a delivery where the pellets are blown along a large hose directly into your fuel store. The further the pellet travels, the more likely it is to suffer damage that can lead to combustion problems. It’s solutions like this we work with regularly as life doesn’t always present us with textbook delivery options!

What are wood chips?

Wood chips are small pieces of logs or wood waste passed through a chipping machine.  Chip can be produced in three sizes 30mm, 50mm or 100mm (G30, G50, G100 – BS Equivalent P16, P31, P45).

What is the calorific value of wood chip?

Depending on the moisture content it is around 3.5 kWh per Kilogram. (20% moisture).

What is the moisture content and does this differ?

Moisture content is usually around 20% but it can be less or more depending on the type of boiler you use.

How much space do I need to store wood chip or pellet?

Wood chips need around three times the storage space of wood pellets; Wood Chips = 250KG/m3 Wood Pellets = 650KG/m3
